At the front of the room, sat the black haired potions teacher fully absorbed in the work that was in front of him. As the last few students staggered in, he finished his feverish scribbling on the parchment, and looked up to admire the class with a slight smile. It was obvious that they had taken notice to his obsessive cleanliness and tendency towards shine and polish. Their eyes, darting around the room taking everything in, this amused him and even caused him to quietly chuckle.
Sectus stood up and walked to the front of the room. “For this potion I am going to pair you all up with someone of a different house, and hopefully someone that you don't know or at least don't know well. So once I have paired you all up, Please go find your partner then go sit down with all your things.” He tapped on the board with his wand and a two column list of names appeared. The students quickly found their name and partner and within minutes were sitting down in new seats waiting for the lesson to begin.
“Normally I am against students trying potions, however this particular potion is very simple to make, and I will look at it first before we proceed.” The students looked at each other quickly from around the room. They were actually allowed to test their potions? This was quite a surprise. “Today we will be making Gregory's Unctuous Unction which is known to the wizarding world as the friendship potion. It's affects are that the drinker will think that the creator of the potion is their best friend. Simple enough, right? The name of this potion is clever. 'Unction' Eng. an ointment, derived from a Latin term meaning 'to anoint with oil'; 'unctuous' is derived figuratively from "unction" and refers to being flattering and friendly in an oily, slimy sort of way. You will be making this potion then I will be placing one small drop of each partner's potion on the opposite partner's tongue so you will feel the effects first hand for about five minutes. Sounds fun, right? Well let's get to work.”
Professor Mortis quickly stepped up to the board and tapped it, the following directions appeared:
Gregory's Unctuous Unction
Ingredients: + 1 billywig stinger + 2 live newts + 1 dog tongue + 1 graphorn's horn + 4 unicorn tail hairs + 7 spiders
1. Fill your cauldron half way with water and place it over the fire.
2. a.Take one billywig and very carefully cut off the stinger. You should see the stinger quite easily because it is black compared to the light-tan colour of the body of the billwig. Try not puncture the stinger, for the poison inside will leak out all over the table.
*Note: If accidentally puncture, do not panic for the poison is not dangerous towards humans. Clean up the mess and use a new billwig.
2. b. Once the stinger is removed from the body, drop the stinger inside the cauldron and place the body inside the marked vile next to the one where you receive the whole one. We will be using this in potions later in the year.
3. Take one dog tongue and dice it so that each piece is roughly the size of a child's thumb nail. Then place the pieces inside the cauldron.
4. Using the pestle and mortar I have provided for you, take one graphorn's horn and crush it into as fine of a power as you can possibly make it. Once the powder begins to resemble white, sparkling glitter, slowly empty as much as the powder as you can into the cauldron. If done correctly the steam emitting from the cauldron should be a vibrate silver.
Note: For those of you who haven't used a mortar and pestle before and don't know where to locate them, they look like this:
5. stir five times counterclockwise than twice clockwise.
6. Take the four unicorn tail hairs and let them fall into the cauldron one at a time, stirring for one minute between each hair.
7. Lastly, drop seven spiders into the cauldron. There should be a slight orange steam coming off of the cauldron that should disappear completely after the potion has cooled.
